As a design educator, I believe that students’ accomplishments are connected to my success. Reliable commitment and engagement with each student are essential to my pedagogical initiative for successful learning outcomes. Because teaching is always an ongoing learning process for me, I try to discover new pedagogical content-knowledge through the new instructions each semester. Students in design disciplines are very diverse in the learning path. Because design learning demands diverse interdisciplinary knowledge and experience through the academic environment, it is important to maintain my education up-to-date. With my Ph.D. in interdisciplinary study, I have also expanded my research across other disciplines such as Psychology, Engineering, and Science & Technology, which are focused on STEM initiative. Moreover, my teaching specialty is not limited to subjects in graphic design but includes all disciplines related to human beings that interact with various products and communication. I believe that successful design always shows great in-depth research and process. I am convinced that in-depth visual and written research are the most important components to enhance critical thinking ability for students. Design education is a part of creative performances, but it often brings attention to educators being aware of limited concepts and the idea of design achievement from students’ works. In general, designers demonstrate their knowledge and experiences as part of the technical skillset in creativity, but they always struggle with the visual concept and idea as the best quality of uniqueness and clarity. This phenomenon is very common in the classroom as well as students being pushed by an instructor. Also, design theory and methodology are essential to developing visual concepts and ideas. I consistently demonstrate my teaching for students to accommodate these criteria through the critical thinking process. The methods in concept development and problem-solving should have a logical approach that gives the best satisfaction for the audience to understand visual concepts and ideas as interactive communication. This adoption in the learning process also supports the design ability to deal with any problem-solving in a variety of subject matters. 

As a recipient of a distinguished teaching awards and Lincy professorship award at UNLV, I was selected as a committee member for the Best Teaching Practice Expo. The committee’s role is not only for reviewing applicants’ proposals but also for developing this venue for instructional development and research work. I have also expanded my contribution across the campus. I have taught many graduate students from the architecture, science and engineering programs who are willing to learn visual design research subjects in which they have fewer opportunities to have a learning experience. Even though spending extra hours accommodating graduate students from outside of the department, I perceive that it is significantly important to share our knowledge and content with others of the campus community. Also, I was invited to several universities as the guest speaker to deliver my pedagogy in teaching and learning. With successful learning outcomes from our students at UNLV, many educators adopted my teaching methods into their teaching. This result makes me so proud of my students and UNLV. Without their contributions and teamwork, I would not have been able to achieve my goal and success. All my enhanced scholastic research and creativity in this summary have addressed the importance of education and disciplines of my professional career as a dedicated educator, and I continue my sincere respect for my students and other educators.

As a design researcher, I have demonstrated my scholastic research activities nationally and internationally to develop my teaching pedagogy and to prepare a future research direction. My research has expanded in a variety of design topics and pedagogical initiatives for obtaining broad knowledge and experiences. Many of my research outcomes have been introduced in the design exhibition, conference presentation, and design journal. Throughout both graphic and industrial design backgrounds, my research includes both traditional and digital media, but not limited to spatial and temporal orientation for interactive communication. As stated with a few notable research experiences, I have cultivated successful research outcomes for the development of new design theories and methods in Secondary Brand Identity (SBI), denotative and connotative symbols, and interactive time-based composition in kinetic typography. As I tried to contribute to the Top-tier Research initiative of the UNLV strategic plan, I have set my preparation into a new/future trend of design research in the academic filed. With earning my second terminal degree, “Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)” during my post-tenure, I could be able to expand my insight beyond graphic design. HCI is a core term for many disciplines, however, I have investigated the user-centered design which is exactly connected to UX (User experience) and UI (User Interface) Design in a wide scope of design disciplines. I have conducted many research projects related to a human subject that designers strive findings in interdisciplinary. My research direction and interests from the HCI have impacted scholastically in a design community and association that brought great attention to my research in user-centered design. Several of my visual graphic works have also represented human beings as to how we see, feel, communicate, and interact with their contexts and values. I have presented and published those findings from my research outcomes, and those have impacted the academic and industry as well. Recent UX/UI research manuscript, “A comparison study of the smartphone gaming control,” in the HCI field was accepted by the “Journal of Usability Studies” through the peer-review process and published in August 2019. The research method approached both qualitative and quantitative measurements of usability in the smartphone input control system. Another significant impact on my professional activity is to become an editorial board member of the “Archive of Design Research,” (ADR) and “Design Works.” The Journal of ADR and Design Works are associated with the KSDS (Korean Society of Design Science), one of the world-class design research fields and organizations which is also affiliated with DRS (Design Research Society) and IASDR (International Association of Societies of Design Research). Executive board members from many different countries have nominated me as a thesis editorial board member and I have been serving in this role for over 7 years. This has impacted and influenced my research activities off-campus and has been acknowledged by many colleagues in my field.

My future research plan is to demonstrate UX/UI in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). AI’s product design and IoT in deep-learning are significant to study for user-centered design. Moreover, HCI research shifts an AI’s usability and interaction design through product form and function in the future living environment. I am very interested in studying interactive communication between AI and human-being as how users should/should not think between digital and analog. My research will be directed into discovering empirical evidence of effectiveness for using products approached both qualitative and quantitative measurements of usability. As the human-centered design is primary research in interaction design, my research will reach out to various areas in which analog and digital are integrated. Another research initiative is to collaborate with other researchers and scholars. Interaction design is not limited, but very much broad areas since human beings have developed with digital technology and environment such as wearable design for healthcare, intelligent cars for safety, mobile devices for the personal assistant, etc. Human beings will be changed as to how users create a new culture and society in a corresponding development of digital media. Thus, it is important to understand complex patterns from human behaviors and cognition of human sensors and my goal of future research will expand various experiments with the design environment and human-being.
